You soon will be reading more about biomaterials being used in more vaccines to fight infectious diseases.
Biomaterials help to replace or revive body parts, tissue or bodily function. Scientists are enthusiastic about the growing prospect of using biomaterials in vaccines. For example, studies now are underway to develop microneedles and other devices that will target immune cells without causing pain.
Biomaterials can be natural or synthetic or a hybrid of the two.
New use
Biomaterials already are used for implants and prosthetics, but scientists are enthusiastic about expanding their use to vaccines and cancer treatment.
They mesh well with other elements in vaccines and have had some success in experiments.
The size and shape of biomaterials help physicians direct the treatment and to activate immune responses.
A scientific report said:
“Biomaterials offer key design benefits such as control over the loading and release kinetics of multiple immune cargos, and protection from enzymatic degradation and extreme pH.
“Furthermore, biomaterials can be conjugated with antibodies or receptor ligands to provide molecularly specific targeting to immune cells or tissues; this feature can be exploited to reduce systemic and local toxicity.”
