Pharmacy is go-to spot for shots, info
Fall is the season for immunizations, and your community pharmacy is an ideal location for vaccinations and vaccination information.
Topping the list for many adults: Shots to prevent RSV, flu and Covid. Not to mention shingles, pneumonia and more.
What’s RSV?
Most people are familiar with flu and Covid shots, but RSV is a relative newcomer and not as controversial. It can prevent lower respiratory tract disease caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms.
RSV can cause illness in people of all ages but may be especially serious for infants and older adults:
- Infants up to 12 months of age (especially those 6 months and younger) and children who were born prematurely, or who have chronic lung or heart disease or a weakened immune system.
- Older adults, adults with chronic medical conditions such as heart or lung disease, weak immune systems, or other underlying medical conditions, or who live in nursing homes or long-term care facilities.
Where to go?
Your community pharmacist can advise you about RSV, flu and Covid shots. Most pharmacies offer shots with little waiting; pharmacists are specially trained how to administer shots.
The pharmacist can address your concerns: fear of needles, questions about efficacy, side effects, and the need for immunization.
